As soon as I hear this voice I immediately recognize it as one of my favorite artists, Sia. Therefore, context plays a large role in creating the identity of this voice. Sia has a very breathy voice that is unique. This causes her voice to be identifiable by many people, not just fans. Speaking in terms of subject position, when I hear Sia’s voice I can immediately picture her: a famous, white, female vocalist/songwriter from Australia. Context also gives the song Chandelier deeper meaning than Sia’s words alone. She sings the lyrics “One two three one two three drink, throw ‘em back til I lose count” (Sia). Out of context and without audio, these lyrics could be read in an upbeat way that may make it sound like a party song for college students. From what I know about Sia, she is not only a singer but is a songwriter, and writes her own songs as well as many other famous singers’. Sia is also a recovered alcoholic and drug addict that has struggled with bipolar disorder, deppression and survived a suicide attempt. Knowing this, her song and her shakey, breathy voice that seems on the edge of breaking, is given so much meaning. As a listener you can relate the song to struggles in your own life, or those you have seen in family members or loved ones going through some of what she has. Most of all this context gives her lyrics and voice authenticity, as her lyrics are as raw as her voice.
